First, let’s explore the theory of going “deeper,” or even the necessity of doing so.

We always suggest, as most hypnotists do, for the subjects to go “deeper and deeper”with the premise that when you go into deeper levels of hypnosis, it is more enjoyable and your subconscious mind becomes more accessible and more amenable to accept the suggestions.

Kreskin, who has stated that “There is no such thing as hypnosis,” would have no need for subjects/volunteers to go deeper since he primarily works with them in the “waking” state.

He might have appoint since we, who do believe in hypnosis, generally agree to the following premises:

  1. Refractory and /or subjects who know they are being hypnotized and decide to resist cannot be hypnotized.

  2. Those that are able to enter the hypnotic state usually fall into these levels:

    1. Light levels of relaxation where the client is totally aware of surroundings and sounds.

    2. Medium levels, referred to as Alpha-Theta states whereby the client has all the faculties as above but is profoundly relaxed and theoretically able to accept and follow suggestions. Also, has the ability to pass tests and challenges.

    3. The deepest level, commonly known as Somnambulism, whereby the subject is still aware of surroundings but more or less in a vague or detached state of mind. Acceptance of suggestion in this level is believed to be instantaneous and without critical resistance. However, my experience has shown that even somnambulists can actually reject selective suggestions.

Ok. Let’s go with the assumption that, in most cases, going into deeper levels is more enjoyable and more effective for the client.

Here is my scenario for some very effective deepening tools.

I give it to you here, word-for-word. Those words that are capitalized and in bold type are key words that subjects will tune into.

“Please take a nice deep breath, exhale and close your eyes. Now, take another deep breath and as you exhale, let’s get rid of any stress, tensions or irritations. If you would, please take one more real deep breath, exhale and lend me the use of your imagination.

I would like you to take the attitude that being experiencing hypnosis and learning actually how to use self-hypnosis is a wonderful OPPORTUNITY. Begin now to relax your body as if you were a ‘rag doll.’ Let your muscles sag. Let your body sag. Capture a nice calm, peaceful feeling. Become a ‘rag doll.’

Drift and dream and float into a deep hypnotic sleep. Let sleep be on your mind. (I have already explained to the client that while hypnosis is closer to daydreaming, I will use the terms “sleep and awaken” only as a convenience).

Feel your body relaxing perhaps more deeper and more enjoyably than you have in some time.

Notice how EASY it is to enjoy hypnotic relaxation since 15 minutes in hypnosis is like sleeping for several hours and the DEEPER YOU GO, THE MORE YOU ENJOY IT.”

(At this point, I would continue with Progressive Relaxation technique or one that you desire to use, and then introduce this very effective deepening method).

“As you are watching, in your mind, a beautiful lake scene just as if you are right there and every muscle, every nerve in your body is profoundly relaxed it is now time to go much deeper.

Stay in the lake scene, feel your body relaxing and as I count from ten to one, you will drop to the next plateau and finally down to what I call TOTAL RECEPTIVITY.

Ten…………..nine……………………eight………….seven…deeper now……………..six……..five…………….four……………three……………..two…………and on the next count, allow yourself to enjoy the WONDERFUL FEELINGS of being carefree and having so much fun. All the way down now on…………….one.

And now I will help you to even go deeper. Please focus on your left hand, but don’t move it. Now, focus on the pointing finger of your left hand and lift it up for me just about ½ inch.

Good. Now put your finger down (very often the finger will stay up).

Now, focus on your eyelids and notice how PLEASANTLY HEAVY they feel. It is a nice feeling. If you can feel the heaviness in your eyelids, raise that finger for me. Good. Now let’s make your eyelids even heavier. I want you to imagine or pretend that your eyelids are as HEAVY AS LEAD. It is a nice feeling. Your eyelids are so heavy because they feel like they are made of lead, that heavy metal. As I count from five to one, let your eyelids become as heavy as lead, about 100 times heavier than normal. Five…………four…………….three……………two………………and………………one.

Very, very heavy. If your eyelids feel like they are as heavy as lead, raise that finger for me.

Good. Now keep the heaviness in there and let’s pretend that there is super-glue between your eyelids and that they are stuck tightly together. I’ll remove the glue in a few moments but I want you to feel the heaviness and the glue that has your eyelids stuck together. On the count of three,

You will try to open your eyes, but no matter how hard you try, they will NOT OPEN!

Pretend all of that and when you realize, (deepening via realization), that your eyelids are indeed stuck together, you will enter the deepest, most effective and most enjoyable level of hypnosis.

One…………….your eyelids are very, very heavy. Two………….they are also stuck together with super-glue. Three…………….you try to open them but they will not open! Try hard……they won’t open. Now, stop trying and sleep now deeper and deeper!”

This method, when used verbatim, is highly effective. If by chance the subject opens the eyes, all is not lost, just do it again stressing the words IMAGINE>>>>>PRETEND.

I also explain that even though they were “pretending,’ that the subconscious mind does not know the difference between real or imagined, so for all intents and purpose the eyelids were indeed locked!

What this does is act as a convincer and realization that “WOW, my eyelids were really locked.”

Try it and see if your success rate will improve.
