There are a lot of people who dread visiting dentists. Many are afraid of the pain and ask for anesthesia while some can’t tolerate a painful shot to the gums or they have an allergy with local anesthesia and can only be treated using general anesthesia, so they look for another alternative such as hypnosis.
According to the German Society of Dental Hypnosis (DGZH), fearful patients transmit their tension unconsciously to the dentist and this can affect the treatment itself as the dentist feels the tension. As the DGZH describes it, dental hypnosis aims to put the patient in a relaxed "trance state" for the procedure.
